Very eventfull weekend
Started with hip pain on saturday night which got worse and worse as the night went on. So much so that I spent the night sitting on the edge of the bed sobbing. My lovely fiance Karl, spent the night bringing me pain killers, helping me in and out of bed, and looking so worried and upset. Anyway in the end I called the hospital where I have my rheumy appointments and they told me to go to A&E.
The doctor there was lovely she called the oncall rheumatology reg and here the battle begins. He was very reluctant to see me saying I should be treated at the hospital I usually go to. The A&E doctor told him they had told me to go to A&E. She also said I'm guessing seen as though claire has never been through A&E before with her RA that this episode is the worst she has had (and she would be correct!!)
I was eventually sent to the ward. Dr Ahmed (yes named and shamed) give me a long sermon of how I should be at Chapel Allerton (to which I repeated they told me to go to A&E), he did not have my notes because it was the weekend (I don't care just listen to what I am telling you, my RA, my version of events therefore the best history!!) He then said that he thought I seemed quite comfortable nowThumbDown Sad Confused, you have to admire the mans bravery here, to which I replied thanks to the morphine!! He then said he would inject my hip and the whole process from ordering the depo from pharmacy to getting the joint injection took two and a half hours!!! Now I'm not complaing about the time spent in A&E, the staff were great, or the staff on the ward or the seven hours I spent in the hospital. It was the attitude of the Rheummy doc. My background is in paediatric nursing and I was taught very early on to LISTEN to the patient, take on board their experience. I DON't care if he didn't have my notes or if he doesn't work with Prof Emery.
Plus as I was leaving he gave me the sermon again.....brave brave Dr AhmedLOL

All I can say is this is shameful and he shouldn't be a Doctor, especially not one working in the A&E!

I also believe they have a duty to listen properly (it is as important as their medical knowledge) to each and every patient.

Knowing how agonising hip pain is I empathise with you so deeply, and I am just glad they administered the steroid. I had mine done via ultra sound in October and it has held all this time! I hope yours does too!

Can I ask you how you sleep when you have the pain as the only position I found slightly bearable was standing up with all my weight on the other leg! (LOL)

Much love to you,

Amanda

Hi Claire,
When will they learn? I'm glad to hear that you gave Dr Ahmed a piece of your mind his doctor patient communication skills appear to be sadly lacking, and I think a letter to PALS is in order as he is in dire need of a refresher course on how to communicate with patients, What a ......

Barbara

Hi Claire,

I agree with Barbara, write to Pals.
You should also mention it to Prof Emery at your next appointment.
Hope the steroid injection works well for you.

I also suggested a word with Prof Emery, Doreen. I'm sure he would be mortified to hear ANYONE had been treated like this

Yes Jean, at least if he gets to hear of it he will be bound to speak to whichever consultant is in charge of the doctor concerned .

Thankyou everyone for your replies.
They've brought my Rheummy appointment forward to friday and I definately will be letting Prof Emery know how upset I was with the treatment I recieved.
Amanda- I too contemplated sleeping standing upLOL The only way I can get some sleep with the hip pain is to sleep sitting up with a pillow underneath the painful hip!!! needless to say I don't get much sleep!!!
take care everyone

Hi John
Yeah that is exactly what he was afraid of!! He definately had the "i'm an extremely important doctor" attitude about him. Even got up to answer his mobile during our conversation (which had a Tarzan swinging through the trees) ringtone very apt!!

Dear Bella,

I am so glad that you have an appointment so that you can get help for your hip ASAP.
The behaviour of that Doctor was disgusting and certainly not how he is well paid and trained to behave. Please write a strong letter of complaint when you feel up to it as he will go on bullying and being nasty to people if he is not sent off on a people skills course now.

Take care,

Eleanor x
